Daken Akihiro. Son of Wolverine. I have to admit, I didn't care for the guy at all when he first appeared, but he's starting to grow on me ever since the Original Sin storyline last year. What's also great is Dark Wolverine, which he stars in. Daniel Way and Marjorie Liu are turning this stone cold killer into a real character. He's already involved himself in other circles of the Marvel Universe as one of Norman Osborn's Avengers, and made allies out of the Fantastic Four. His best moment, of course, is in the Dark Reign - The List: Punisher special, where he takes on the Punisher that only one of them got to walk away from.

Cobra Commander and Destro. Together, they run Cobra, a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world. Also, the most extravagant. They have ridiculous hideouts that probably cost billions to build. They also come up with some of the most ridiculous schemes to seize control of the planet. I mean, if they didn't bother spending all their overhead on ridiculous bases and weaponry, they wouldn't have to demand billions of dollars from the government. Just saying...

That didn't end well for old Mongul here.

Of course, it's only a matter of time before he makes an idiot of himself again. He's clearly one of the most fascinating characters of the last couple of years. Also a lot of fun to draw.

I tried my best to do some Kirby-tech for this piece, and I think I'm fairly successful at it. As far as Darkseid goes, I always enjoyed drawing the character, so I had no doubt this piece would turn out well. I threw in the firepit in the background, because it really tied it all together. Don't you agree?

Plugging away...

Originally uploaded by PatLoika
Been working on mini-sketches and holiday cards. Here's a sampling. Of course, I'll be scanning these in hi-res and turning them into sketchblog fodder VERY soon.

I'm a little over halfway done inking Blacklisted, working out layouts for two other stories, and also, a webcomic. The webcomic has no schedule, most likely going to be weekly. No particular subject for that, its just randomness from any given day of the week. You'll see soon enough.

Cyclops and Emma Frost
Originally uploaded by PatLoika
Cyclops and Emma Frost. Originally, I was planning to ink and color this piece. But my pal David Price liked it and I offered him a chance to ink this with his new tablet, so I did a full pencil rendering.

The funny thing is, I got carried away. REALLY carried away. The piece ended up in a position where it shouldn't be inked or colored, and a bunch of twitter buddies helped me keep it in its current state.

So thanks, and enjoy this sketch!

It's depressing to think that the rights over the Fu-Manchu character is preventing Marvel from putting out collections of this classic run.

I drew this for a friend of mine over in the UK. Hope he enjoys it!

This was a fun piece. The limited amount of colors needed was also a great challenge. I wanted to keep with the gray tones and stray away from putting in bright colors, which I would normally use to fill the background with. Thankfully the negative white space worked well, and made the figure, and the foreground smoke pop out.

Comic you SHOULD be reading.

Nothing makes me happier in any given month than seeing the next issue of Criminal in my pile of new books. Criminal, for those who don't know, is a crime-noir comic created by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. The book is basically a series of mini-series, featuring a different protagonist in each storyline, and is very easily accessible for new readers.

The first issue of the new storyline 'The Sinners', just shipped last week, and it features the return of Tracy Lawless (last seen in book 2, Lawless). The good news is that you needn't have to have read Lawless to get into this story. It tells you all you need to know about Tracy, and why he's in the position he's in right now.

Criminal: The Sinners is monthly, and costs $3.50. Aside from the comic story, there are articles included as well. Ed Brubaker writes, Sean Phillips illustrates, and Val Staples colors. Buy this book!

Today's sketch is Magneto, as he appeared in Excalibur vol. 2. The challenge in this piece is the fact that the costume is meant to be black. Of course, doing the piece in full black inks would just come out looking boring and lazy. I ended up using one of the darker grays that I had and re-inked the muscles and the form over it. I was pretty satisfied with the results.

This piece, like yesterday's, was done for our family sketch drive. For more info, follow this link: http://tinyurl.com/yawjff4

War Machine and Shang Chi sketches

What I'm currently working on. See? I'm blogging!

Sketchblog: Day 01

This is a jam piece that my brother and I had done for our sketch-drive. My brother drew the Grey Gargoyle, I drew Thor. This was done in less than two hours, and the only thing difficult about it is figuring out a good pose to put the characters in, knowing that its a jam piece.

I'm pretty satisfied with how it turned out. I was also surprised that the buyer preferred to keep the piece in black & white, considering how much he had donated.

We're still accepting donations for sketches, see this entry for more details.

What are you looking at?

Well, this blog is basically, well, a blog. There's no specific purpose to it, except that I intend to use this to post content. Whether it be a review, new artwork, a rant...it's my sounding board on the internet. This will also be accompanied by a podcast that I vow to put out whenever I feel like I really have something worth saying. Basically, it's all about ME.

I'll be phasing out the old sketchblog in favor of this, and I hope to eventually resume posting the daily sketches, but through here.

Anyways, welcome to the new blog. This should be fun.

One of the comics that hooked me into the medium when I was younger was the Infinity Gauntlet. It was a big Marvel event that had all their major characters banding together against a common foe...and they lost.

The book continues to be one of my favorites, and when I heard that Kotobukiya was putting out a diorama based on it, I was worried that my broke ass couldn't afford it. Thankfully my brother wasn't. He got this for me as an advanced Christmas and birthday present.

Coming soon...
